UTMS sensors can be deployed along roads to warn troops and vehicles of activities that may be related to IED placement.
Typically terrorists place roadside IEDs at nighttime in drains or culverts along rural roads. UTMS sensors are placed ahead of time in these vulnerable locations to record and store data on movement of people and vehicles within the sensor’s detection range. The convoy travelling along the road carries a tablet-PC based control unit that automatically connects to the sensors once it gets within a predefined range and downloads the stored data. The operator can see time, duration and location of suspicious activities and initiate a bomb disposal procedure.
